Reestablish

The following is a body of work Reestablish was created in the fall of 2007.

Artist Statement:

I have always in one way or another used the face, and, or human body in my work as a metaphor for myself. I break down the body and its features gesturely into different sections and shapes. These individual forms and shapes created within the facial features and bodies, are now reconstructed back into abstract faces and figures. By deconstructing and reconstructing the parts of the body using its own forms I’m putting the pieces back together, symbolizes a change within oneself. I am disassembling myself and reconstructing a new form out of the old parts. These forms are not fully developed yet into a full figure, they are still expanding, illustrating that we are constantly progressing and growing.
Through the use of collagraph I am able to physically construct layers of shapes in a variety of different textures. The physicality of this technique allows me to explore many levels of shapes and textures creating depth. Shapes as well as string are being used. The string is the fluidity of the human form trying to hold all the shapes together, as well as representational timeline. The shapes are sections from a previous body. The shapes are used to makes up parts of the figure as well as creating negative spaces that also act as part of the face and body. By leaving the negative shapes, the background layers are able to show through signifying all the hidden past layers that are still important to the body but are not as noticeable as the new growth. The works are printed in earth tones, in order to soften the look of the print and give it a more gentle feel, as well as connecting the images to nature. For the reason that, the nature of every living thing is change.
